Australian Simone Young directs biggest concert ever – from top of Hamburg church

Written by Daniel Hildebrandt
Last night Hamburg turned into a music hall. 100 musicians of the philharmonic orchestra were placed at 50 different spots throughout the city. Thereby the artists were conducted by Simone Young. The Australian, who since August 2005 is Hamburg’s new music director of the orchestra, stood on the tower of the famous Saint Michaels church, 82 m above the ground.

The justified question is how she managed to conduct the 100 instruments scattered across the city. The musicians were able to see her on televisions, which were placed in front of them. On Saturday the dress rehearsal tested this extraordinary challenge, so that yesterdays performance could be performed successfully.
